Phones at Work

Most workplaces do not appreciate if you use your phone while it is supposed to work. Many companies have implemented rules prohibiting cell phone use in work areas. If you are a person who can not bear to be without your phone, there are some simple rules to ensure that your mobile phone use does not interfere with work, the supervisor, or your employees.

The first rule you should follow if you are bringing your phone to work is to turn the ringer off. Leave the phone will vibrate if you must have. This will keep your phone ringer to disturb the people around you. It can also prevent your boss to know how many calls you get at work.

When you do get a call at work, it may be prudent to leave the call to be picked up by voicemail. This prevents other workers from complaining about the boss calls you receive. It also eliminates any temptation that you may need to start a conversation that really should not have.

While working, you should only respond to important calls. These include calls from his son, called his school, and emergencies that must be treated immediately. Chatting with your sister or checking on the appointment of a doctor that you have next week are not emergencies.

When you need to make cell phone calls, you should find an isolated place to do it. In the break room during lunch when there are twenty other employees sitting around is not a private place. Having a conversation in front of co-workers who are not included in is rude. If you chose a place in the workplace during break time, you can distract people who are still working on trying to eavesdrop on the conversation.

You should never ever use the phone in a public bathroom. If one of your colleagues is going to the bathroom and the person at the other end of the phone call that you can hear is a violation of privacy your colleagues'. You might also consider that many bathrooms in the workplace are wide and the echo so that any employee who is to be able to hear the entire conversation.

It is recommended not to take the phone to any meetings. The concentration must be at work and your boss will notice if you are paying attention. Even if you have the phone set to vibrate, if it rings it can disrupt the whole meeting as you gain some unwelcome attention from the supervisor. You should also never check your cell phone to identify who's calling. Your boss will think that you do not care about your work.

While some companies have stopped the use of cell phones during working hours, companies that allow them to encourage their employees to use them only in case of emergency. Otherwise, you should only make calls on their time, as during breaks and lunch. This gesture is just a common courtesy that you extend to his superiors and colleagues.
